Which template is best for self-employed people in the UK?
The self-employed version of the Cash Book is the most useful starting point. It runs from April to March to match the UK tax year, and produces the income and expenditure figures you need for your self-assessment tax return. Pair it with the Mileage Log if you use a vehicle for business.
Are these Excel accounting templates suitable for limited companies?
These templates can help a small limited company organise individual records, such as bank transactions, invoices, money owed and fixed assets. However, a Cash Book alone is not a complete company accounting system. Limited companies must keep full accounting records and prepare annual accounts, so accounting software or professional support is usually more appropriate.
What records does HMRC require me to keep?
If you are self-employed, keep records of your business income and expenses, including invoices, receipts and bank records. You normally need to keep these for at least five years after the 31 January submission deadline for the relevant tax year. Separate rules apply to VAT, payroll and limited-company records.
Can I use these in Google Sheets instead of Excel?
