Learn how to register for VAT. If you run a business and your sales are over £77,000 for the last 12 months you will need to register for VAT. You may also be able to register your business voluntarily.
Before you can register for VAT online you need to register for the Government Gateway. This takes several days to complete as you need to register for the services, obtain a user ID and also an activation code which will be sent by post to complete the process. Once your account is activated you can complete the online form for VAT registration. The advantages of registering online are that it is secure, there are online help guides and you will receive an acknowledgement immediately.
If you want to register for VAT by post you can either download the application form VAT1 from the HMRC website or request one from their office.
