How to register for VAT
Learn how to register for VAT. If you run a business and your sales are over £85,000 for the last 12 months, you will need to register for VAT. You may also be able to register your business voluntarily.
There are several options for registering for VAT
- If you are opening a new Limited company, some businesses that offer to register your company at Companies House can do it for you.
- Ask your accountant to do it for you.
- Do it yourself, follow the instructions on the Government website. Registration is fairly straightforward, and I have completed it myself on a couple of occasions.
How to Register for VAT Online
Before you can register for VAT online, you need to register for the Government Gateway. It takes several days to complete as you need to register for the services, obtain a user ID and also an activation code which will be sent by post to complete the process. Once your account is activated, you can complete the online form for VAT registration. The advantages of registering online are that it is secure, there are online help guides, and you will receive an acknowledgement immediately.
How to register for VAT by post
If you want to register for VAT by post, you can either download the application form VAT1 from the HMRC website or request one from their office.
